Gérard Schneider (1896–1986) is one of the major figures of French lyrical abstraction. Born in Switzerland and trained in Paris, he established himself in the 1940s as a pioneer of European gestural painting, alongside Hartung and Soulages. His works are featured in major international museums and are regularly offered in prestigious auctions.

This work on paper, executed in ink, gouache, and oil, dated 1984, is an abstract gestural composition of great intensity. Powerful and dynamic black and red forms unfold on a violet-pink background in a movement that is both violent and controlled, characteristic of the artist's maturity. A rare and significant work from Schneider's late period.
